The scandal that refuses to die: in December 2025, a BBC Radio 4 broadcast became the stage for a fresh row over Nigel Farage\u2019s alleged \u201cschoolboy sins\u201d. But in April 2026, the issue flared up all over again \u2014 fuelled by new witness accounts and Reform UK\u2019s political gains. What blew up on air in December 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

During a live edition of the Today<\/em> programme, presenter Emma Barnett asked Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about your leader Nigel Farage\u2019s relationship with Hitler in his younger years.\u201d She was referring to reports in The Guardian<\/em> alleging that, while at Dulwich College in the 1970s, Farage sang Holocaust-related \u201cgas chamber\u201d jokes, performed Nazi salutes, and mocked Jewish and Asian pupils.<\/p>\n

Tice dismissed the claims as \u201cfabrications\u201d, but Farage erupted. He announced a boycott of the BBC and demanded an apology over what he called \u201cdouble standards\u201d. He pointed to 1970s and 1980s BBC-era shows such as The Black and White Minstrel Show<\/em> and It Ain\u2019t Half Hot Mum<\/em>, arguing that offensive material had once been broadcast openly. \u201cYou were putting racism on air every week, and now you\u2019re digging into my youth from 49 years ago?\u201d he said at a press conference, branding the question a \u201cdisgrace\u201d and \u201cvile\u201d.<\/p>\n

Why the scandal came back to life in April 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fresh developments poured fuel on the fire:<\/p>\n

Three new witnesses<\/strong> \u2014 all former Dulwich pupils \u2014 reportedly backed claims of antisemitic songs and \u201cHitler Youth chants\u201d at a school trip. One of them, a BAFTA-winning director, gave an interview to The Guardian<\/em>. Farage dismissed it as a \u201cpolitical witch-hunt\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reform\u2019s win in the Runcorn by-election:<\/strong> in May 2025, Reform won by just six votes, with Sarah Pochin taking 38.7 per cent. A legal challenge brought by the last-placed candidate is still ongoing in the High Court, and some believe the BBC row helped drive turnout.<\/p>\n

Starmer stepped in:<\/strong> at PMQs in November 2025, the Prime Minister said Farage \u201cmust explain racist comments from his schooldays\u201d. In 2026, the row echoed on as Reform took control of councils including Kent and Lancashire.<\/p>\n

The BBC stayed quiet, but Farage turned it to his advantage:<\/strong> \u201cThey attack us, we win,\u201d became the message. With Reform gaining more than 600 seats in the local elections, the controversy only added to the momentum.<\/p>\n

The background to the school allegations<\/strong><\/p>\n

By 2025, 28 witnesses had reportedly come forward with claims including chants such as \u201cGas them all\u201d, racist name-calling, and Nazi-style gestures. A teacher was also said to have recorded concerns in a diary.<\/p>\n

Farage, who was 17 at the time, has denied all of it and blamed what he calls a \u201cwoke campaign\u201d. He has pointed to the fact that he went on to work in the City from 1982 onwards, later entering politics after the Big Bang era.<\/p>\n

Holocaust survivors and campaigners have called on him to apologise publicly.<\/p>\n

Reaction and fallout<\/strong><\/p>\n

Farage supporters say: \u201cThe BBC is just left-wing propaganda. Blackface on their own airwaves was acceptable, but now schoolboy jokes are beyond the pale?\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics say: \u201cThe leader of a political party cannot simply brush off allegations of antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Politically, Reform continues to rise in the polls, hovering around 15 to 20 per cent, especially among Generation X voters. The row has become another front in the broader \u201celite versus ordinary people\u201d narrative that Farage thrives on.<\/p>\n

Bottom line: Farage 1, BBC 0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Hitler-gate\u2019 has not damaged Reform so much as energised it. New witnesses and electoral momentum have kept the story alive. Farage\u2019s position remains defiant: \u201cI will not apologise unless the BBC apologises for the 1970s.\u201d Attention is now turning to the High Court case over Runcorn, where judges will decide whether those six votes stand.
