The ITV daytime programme had only just returned from an advertising break when Susanna Reid told viewers that breaking news had emerged within the previous few minutes.<\/p>\n

According to the presenter, 11 trade unions affiliated with the Labour Party had released a statement casting serious doubt over Keir Starmer\u2019s ability to remain leader ahead of the next general election.<\/p>\n

Reading from the statement, Susanna said the unions believed it was now clear that the Prime Minister would not take Labour into the next national vote and that arrangements would need to be made for the party to choose a successor.<\/p>\n

The announcement came amid further speculation after Wes Streeting was seen entering Downing Street for talks with the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

At the same time, King Charles was preparing to deliver the King\u2019s Speech, outlining the Government\u2019s planned legislation for the forthcoming parliamentary session. But on the ITV sofa, attention quickly turned to the growing pressure surrounding Mr Starmer\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

Susanna and Ed were joined by Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office, as they questioned him about the apparent crisis unfolding within Labour.<\/p>\n

Ed did not hold back as he listed the mounting problems facing the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

He pointed to reports that 90 MPs wanted Mr Starmer to step aside, alongside four ministerial resignations and criticism from council leaders. He then raised the unions\u2019 reported intervention, asking whether the situation had become impossible for the Labour leader to survive.<\/p>\n

Ed asked whether the only remaining question was not if<\/em> Mr Starmer would go, but when<\/em> he would announce his departure.<\/p>\n

Mr Thomas-Symonds initially replied that he had not yet seen the statement from the trade unions, although he understood that one had recently been issued.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

However, before the discussion could continue, Susanna interrupted as live pictures appeared to show Wes Streeting leaving Downing Street.<\/p>\n

His departure raised eyebrows in the studio, as he had reportedly been seen arriving only around 10 minutes earlier. Susanna questioned whether the meeting had taken place at all, or whether it had ended far sooner than expected.<\/p>\n

Mr Thomas-Symonds attempted to downplay the significance of the visit, explaining that the Prime Minister had made clear that cabinet ministers were welcome to speak with him whenever they had concerns or simply wanted an informal conversation.<\/p>\n

He said he had personally spoken with the Prime Minister the previous evening and suggested that a brief morning meeting with Mr Streeting should not be regarded as extraordinary.<\/p>\n

Addressing the intense speculation online, he argued that social media users had portrayed the situation as though it were the climax of a spy thriller, when in reality it may have been nothing more than a short coffee meeting between senior colleagues.<\/p>\n

But his explanation appeared to leave both presenters unconvinced.<\/p>\n

The suggestion that Wes Streeting had visited Downing Street for little more than a casual drink prompted visible surprise from the hosts.<\/p>\n
